The Provincial Coordination and Implementation Committee (PCIC) has decided to keep the width of drains as per the master plan, so the human resettlement and commercial units along the embankments will be shifted. The meeting was held on Monday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah at the CM House. Labour Minister Saeed Ghani, Corps Commander Karachi Lt. Gen. Humayun Aziz, Chairman P&D Muhammad Waseem, GOC and Chief Coordinator PCIC Major General Aqeel Ahmed, Additional Secretary Ministry of Planning Aziz Aqeeli, Brigadier Wasim from NDMAK, Director ISPR Brigadier Jahangir, Administrator Karachi Iftikhar Shallwani, Commissioner Sohail Rajput, Secretary Transport Shariq Ahmed, Secretary Local Government Najam Shah, MD Water Board Asadullah Khan and MSS WMB Zubair Channa and others relevant officers attended the meeting. The meeting was informed that there are 13,441 households and 2,948 commercial units on four canals and one river. There are 5,916 houses and 2,412 commercial units on Gujjar Nullah, 4,480 houses and 380 commercial units on Orangi Nullah, 106 houses on Mahmoodabad Nullah and 1996 houses on Malir river. The government has issued evacuation notices to people living and doing business on the Nullahs and Malir River. The Chief Minister was informed that NED University was conducting a survey. The TORs of the survey include analysis of length, width and capacity of rainwater drains on 44 major canals, survey of drains with physical structures and mapping of encroached land by means of a drone. The Commissioner said that the survey work of 9 drains of Eastern District including Mahmoodabad drain has been completed while the survey of drains of Central District will be completed by the end of this week. The meeting decided to conduct technical study of hydraulic and hydraulic modeling studies of drains. The technical study of the existing drainage network indicates that the expected flow volume in the region will be verified, the details of the cross section of drains will be used to assess the capacity of existing sections to complete the flow, current and future. An ideal cross section will be proposed for each drain based on drainage and flow model for improvement and plans will be made for better management of drainage network to reduce the risks of urban flooding. CM Murad directed the Commissioner to complete the technical study in the next three months. Taking into account various factors, the meeting decided to maintain the original width of the drains as per the master plan. For this, human resettlement and commercial units will be removed from the site. The meeting decided to work on different models of human resettlement and submit them to the next Apex Committee meeting for approval. A three-member committee comprising Administrator Karachi, Commissioner Karachi and Secretary Local Government will prepare rehabilitation plans. Zubair Channa, MD, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), informed the meeting that the clean-up drive for the entire city has been started from October 20, 2020. SSWM is overseeing the operations in Korangi and Central districts. It was decided at the meeting that awards would be given to the best performing districts and union councils. The Sindh Chief Minister said that he would be satisfied only when the residents of the area would start saying that garbage was being removed from their areas on time and cleaning was being done in the best possible manner. He directed all DMC administrators to Keep visiting the area to review the sanitation and drainage works in the area.
