Postgraduate Medical Institute Principal Prof Dr Sardar Muhammad Al-Fareed Zafar has said that only with the joint efforts of public health experts and the people the dengue disease be brought under control and it is the responsibility of every citizen to play its role in this regard.
He further said that doctors, nurses and paramedical staff would have to harness their professionalism in a coordinated manner for the diagnosis and treatment of seasonal and dengue fever to handle it efficiently.
These views were expressed by Principal Prof. Al-freed Zafar while addressing the participants of a Clinical Workshop held at Lahore General Hospital Medical Unit-1 to ensure treatment of dengue patients in which a large number of young doctors/nurses participated.
Prof Ghiasun Nabi Tayyab, Prof Tahiq Siddique, Dr Israrul Haq Toor, Dr Ehsanul Haq, Dr M. Maqsood and the dengue experts team briefed the participants on the symptoms, complications, diagnosis, precautionary measures and various aspects of its treatment.
Prof. Al-freed Zafar said that in the present circumstances there is no doubt that dengue has become more of a public health issue than a health one, which can only be eradicated with the cooperation of social organizations, scholars, medical professionals and the media.
He added that dengue usually affects people with weakened immune systems while there are four types of dengue fever, but the patient has only one of the four types of symptoms commonly.
He asked the patients of dengue not to waste time and seeks immediate medical attention.
He stressed that to precautionary measures it can be possible to avoid dengue disease if citizens express responsible behavior.
Principal further added that in order to be safe from this disease, the breeding of dengue mosquitoes should be stopped and in this regard, people have to eliminate the causes of dengue mosquito breeding in their homes.
Medical experts said that the treatment and care of dengue patients in teaching hospitals is a highly technical issue as people with dengue fever are different from other patients and the diagnosis of the disease, the nature of the symptoms and the use of medicines are very thoughtful.
They said that the doctors should pay special attention to the presence of solution in the body to prevent the severity of dengue fever and turn it into dengue shock syndrome so that water should not accumulate in the lungs or stomach of the patient which can lead to pneumonia and heart disease and the patient needs a ventilator.
Medical experts added that saving the patient’s life in such a critical situation becomes a big challenge for the physician.
They said that it was gratifying that LGH and other hospitals had significant arrangements for the treatment of dengue patients by the Government and these measures were being monitored directly at the highest level.
Talking to the media Principal Prof. Al-freed Zafar said that the proportion of critically ill dengue patients is very low which is very satisfying aspect.
He said that it is the moral responsibility of the doctors to provide proper counseling to the patients and their families while the patients should seek the help of an authorized physician instead of quacks.
The disease should not be aggravated and controlled at the outset as the most important thing is that the dengue patients should contact the doctors and the hospital immediately.
