Engro Chairman Hussain Dawood, other officials acquitted in LNG Scam case

KARACHI – In a sigh of relief for Pakistani industrialist and revered philanthropist Hussain Dawood, an Accountability Court were acquitted in case related to liquefied natural gas (LNG) contract.

Engro officials were facing charges for allegedly receiving unlawful help from then government of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

Engro Elengy – a subsidiary of Engro Corporation and Pakistan’s largest LNG supplier – said it addressed 15 per cent of total gas needs through the terminal involved in the case.

In a statement, the company mentioned that the Accountability Court acquitted Chairman Mr. Hussain Dawood, Director Mr. Abdul Samad Dawood, and former CEO Mr. Sheikh Imran ul Haq in the LNG contract award to Engro Elengy Terminal Limited.

The court found no evidence of any illegal actions, irregularities, or financial losses to the national treasury, it said.

The development comes as country’s top anti-graft watchdog NAB withdrew LNG reference against ex-PM Abbasi.

In the initial filing of case, NAB alleged that unexplained deposits totaling Rs1.294 billion were made into Abbasi’s bank account between 2013 and 2017. The bureau also alleged that Abbasi and other accused individuals misused their public positions by unlawfully awarding an LNG contract, engaging in corruption, and participating in money laundering activities.
