Faiz Hameed arrested by Pakistan Army as former ISI chief faces Court Martial

Former director general Inter-Services Intelligence Lt General (retd) Faiz Hameed has been arrested by Armed forces, the ISPR said.

Army’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the action was initiated as Supreme Court of Pakistan conducted a thorough investigation into the Top City Case involving Lt Gen Faiz Hameed (Retd).

The inquiry aimed to assess legitimacy of complaints against former spymaster. Consequently, disciplinary measures have been taken against him under the Pakistan Army Act, and he faces a Field General Court Martial due to identified violations of the Army Act after his retirement.

An inquiry committee was formed by serving major general, to address allegations of authority misuse by the former Director General of country’s top spy agency. Hameed’s detention was part of an effort toward self-accountability.

The housing giant sought action against Hameed of orchestrating a raid on the offices and residence of its owner, Moeez Khan. Following a Supreme Court directive in November 2023, Khan was advised to seek resolution from relevant authorities, including the defence ministry. The inquiry committee will now prepare and submit its findings to the appropriate authorities.

Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed is under investigation and facing court martial over allegations related to a raid on Top City’s office and home, where valuables were reportedly seized, and extortion claims. The Supreme Court is overseeing the investigation due to the seriousness of these accusations.

Hameed, a three-star general from the Baloch Regiment, had a distinguished military career, including roles as General Officer Commanding of the 16th Infantry Division, Commander of the XXXI Corps, and ISI chief from January 2017 to April 2019. He joined the Pakistan Military Academy in 1987 and held key positions, including Adjutant General and Corps Commander, before his early retirement in 2022.

Previously, Hameed faced allegations of judicial manipulation in the Panama Papers case involving former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, which he denied, claiming the accusations were false and asserting that bench constitution was the IHC chief justice’s responsibility.
