Latest Update on WhatsApp, Facebook disruptions after second Internet Firewall Trial

Pakistani government is testing internet firewall and second phase of testing is reportedly completed as authorities are tightening noose around internet users amid alleged propaganda and to control dissent.

A report shared in local media said a second trial of Pakistan media firewall has been completed to manage online content and strengthen cybersecurity. The implementation of these firewalls by internet service providers allows for blocking of social media applications and limits the downloading of audio and video files.

WhatsApp Update in Pakistan

The installation and testing of the firewall led to temporary disruptions in mobile signals and internet services. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address controversial content and counteract propaganda on social media.

After completion of firewall test, WhatsApp and Facebook will be restored within 2-3 days. The firewall’s deployment is a major move towards regulating online content and enhancing cybersecurity in Pakistan.

With new firewall in place, the firewall will allow authorities to have an eye on online activities to prevent the spread of dangerous content.

Internet Slowdown in Pakistan

The digital economy in country of millions is struggling amid a significant slowdown in internet speeds, which internet service providers attribute to increased government surveillance.

This disruption also dented call centers and e-commerce, prompting some businesses to consider relocating. There was around 40 percent drop in speeds, raising concerns about potential damage to Pakistan’s digital reputation and economic stability.
