Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi’s acting Ameer, Saifuddin Advocate, who also serves as the opposition leader in the city council, has strongly criticized the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leadership and Karachi’s mayor over their handling of the city’s water crisis and alleged discriminatory policies. Speaking in response to a press conference by the mayor, Saifuddin alleged that PPP’s leadership is frustrated by the development initiatives in nine towns of Karachi led by JI. He accused the mayor of being incompetent and lacking a public mandate, calling the relationship between PPP and corruption an “open secret.”
The JI leader condemned the filing of an FIR against citizens who protested the prolonged water crisis by releasing valves on water tankers. He criticized the PPP for failing to take action against those responsible for leaking the city’s 84-inch water supply line and for other infrastructural failures. “Why is there no FIR against K-Electric for broken power lines?
This hypocrisy is unacceptable,” he said. Saifuddin labeled PPP’s current governance as a “compound of fascism, corruption, and politics of interests.” He added that while the party relies on the legacy of Benazir Bhutto, it undermines the democratic process and neglects Karachi’s needs.
Holding the mayor accountable, Saifuddin pointed out that as the chairman of Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation and Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, the mayor is directly responsible for the ongoing water crisis and uncollected garbage across the city. He further highlighted the poor state of 106 major roads and 44 drains under the Karachi Municipal Corporation’s jurisdiction, blaming PPP’s 16 years of rule in Sindh for the city’s plight.
The JI leader emphasized that Karachi’s residents have been unfairly treated in the allocation of funds and vowed to continue highlighting the city’s issues. He reiterated that his criticism is not personal but aimed at holding the government accountable for its failures.
