Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah presided over a meeting of the oversight committee for Jinnah Hospital, the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), and the National Institute of Child Health (NICH). The meeting was attended by Health Minister Dr. Azra Pechuho, Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and other key officials.
The Chief Minister announced that the oversight committee would supervise the three hospitals from August 2023 to August 2048, ensuring quality healthcare services and effective human resource management. The committee will also be responsible for appointing executive directors for the hospitals. He revealed that in 2011, Jinnah Hospital had 1,185 beds and 2,339 employees. Currently, the hospital has 2,208 beds but only 509 clinical staff and 37 FCPS doctors.
The Sindh government has added 1,023 new beds and created 2,025 contract positions for them. Additionally, 563 FCPS doctors, 878 nurses, and 584 technicians have been appointed to strengthen the workforce. The Chief Minister highlighted that when these hospitals were transferred to Sindh, their combined budget was just Rs. 1.9 billion, which has now increased to Rs. 25.75 billion. He directed the Advocate General to resolve the matter of appointing Jinnah Hospital’s Executive Director through the courts. Murad Ali Shah further emphasized that the Sindh government has worked tirelessly to improve these federally transferred hospitals, ensuring better healthcare services for the public.
