ISLAMABAD – Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir received prestigious Field Marshal’s Baton from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Zardari.
The event marks rare and historic moment in Pakistan’s military history, as General Munir becomes only the second officer to be elevated to the ceremonial five-star rank of Field Marshal, following the late Field Marshal Ayub Khan.
The ceremony was attended by senior political figures, including former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, alongside top military officials. General Munir’s promotion follows federal cabinet approval in recognition of his leadership during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and the conflict referred to as Marka-i-Haq.
The Ministry of Defence issued the official promotion notification under Rule 199-A of the Pakistan Army Regulations (Rules), 1998, with immediate effect.
