ISLAMABAD – Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Lieutenant General (Retired) Sajjad Ghani, has stepped down from his post, citing personal reasons. His resignation has been sent to the Cabinet Division for formal approval by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Shehbaz Sharif lauded the contributions of Lt. Gen. (R) Sajjad Ghani to Pakistan’s energy and infrastructure sectors. He acknowledged Ghani’s leadership in effectively managing WAPDA and his pivotal role in supervising critical energy projects across the country.
PM Sharif extended his heartfelt appreciation for Ghani’s services and conveyed his best wishes for his future endeavors.
Lt. Gen. (R) Sajjad Ghani had been leading WAPDA during a crucial time marked by major power and water infrastructure developments, including dam construction and energy diversification initiatives. His departure marks the end of a tenure noted for strategic planning and institutional strengthening within the authority.
The government is expected to announce a successor in the coming days.
Sajjad Ghani
Ghani was appointed as 23rd Chairman of WAPDA in mid 2022. A graduate of the Military College of Engineering, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1984 and went on to complete a Master’s in civil engineering from UET Lahore.
His rare dual career path as a civil engineer and military officer uniquely positioned him to oversee some of Pakistan’s most complex infrastructure initiatives.
During his military service, Lt. Gen. Ghani held several critical positions. He served as Commander of the Corps of Engineers and later as Quartermaster General, overseeing major construction and logistics operations for the armed forces. His appointments also included Vice Chief of General Staff at General Headquarters (GHQ) and Corps Commander Karachi.
