LAHORE – Punjab capital Lahore to be equipped with Water Meters under new plan, Water and Sewerage Authority WASA confirmed in latest bid to transform Water usage system in provincial capital.
In a key step towards water conservation and environmental protection, Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) announced that water meters will soon be installed across Lahore, starting with commercial connections.
The announcement was made during hearing on smog case at Lahore High Court, presided over by Justice Shahid Karim. WASA officials presented a prototype of water meter to court, emphasising agency’s readiness to begin implementation.
Punjab government’s legal representative informed court that the budget has already been allocated for installation of 2lac water meters in the metropolis to promote responsible water usage and address the growing concerns of water wastage and scarcity.
Lahore High Court Justice Shahid Karim praised WASA’s efforts, calling initiative commendable, and stressed that water is critical issue that will impact future generations. LHC also took strong stance on environmental issues, stating that it will not permit the cutting of trees along Canal Road. Criticizing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the judge noted the lack of visibility and effectiveness of the department’s enforcement teams, despite significant staffing.
The court has requested a detailed report on the deployment of EPA teams and adjourned the hearing until June 27.
