JEDDAH – Kiswa, the sacred black cloth that covers Kaaba, will be ceremonially replaced at Masjid Al Haram in Makkah on Muharram 1, after Asr prayer as Muslims welcome New Year with an annual tradition.
This spiritual event, held every year, draws significant attention from Muslims worldwide and is regarded as one of the holiest rituals in Islam. The ceremony symbolizes not only the renewal of the Kiswa but also unity, reverence, and devotion across the Muslim ummah.
According to officials, all logistical and ceremonial preparations have been completed. More than 200 experienced craftsmen have been tasked with the delicate process of handling and installing the new Kiswa.
Kaaba Kiswa Changing Ceremony
The new covering, produced over the course of 11 months at the King Abdulaziz Complex for Manufacturing the Kaaba Kiswa, weighs a total of 1,415 kilograms. It includes 1,000 kilograms of pure silk and is adorned with intricate Quranic verses.
The embroidery, crafted with 120 kilograms of gold thread and 100 kilograms of silver, adds a stunning visual and spiritual depth to the cloth. The Kiswa is composed of four large panels along with 47 smaller sections, showcasing the precision and artistry of its makers.
This annual event not only honors centuries of tradition but also serves as a powerful reminder of faith, unity, and the sacred connection Muslims share with the holy Kaaba.
