LAHORE – At least four people died and 19 were injured in rain-related mishaps in Punjab on Thursday.
Lahore and parts of Punjab received the first significant monsoon rains, which brought life to a standstill by causing inundation, massive traffic jams and power outages. Downpour and lightning also caused damage to public life and property.
According to a report issued by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Thursday, four people lost their lives while another 19 were injured in rain-related accidents in the province.
Two citizens died due to the collapse of dilapidated buildings in Okara and Bahawalnagar. In Jhelum, two citizens died due to drowning. The wet spell affected 13 dilapidated buildings and mud houses.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has directed the provision of the best medical treatment to the injured. He said the bereaved families will be compensated. “Assistance will also be ensured to the families of the deceased under the government policy”, he said.
PDMA DG appealed to the citizens to take precautionary measures. He further said that this spell of monsoon rains will continue till July 1. “Citizens are requested to take precautionary measures during wet and windy conditions”, he said.
