LAHORE – At least 21 people lost their lives and 57 others were injured as heavy rains accompanied by powerful windstorms battered various parts of Punjab between June 25 and 29, causing widespread destruction and disruption.
The official reports said that the storm brought wind speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour, which led to the collapse of trees, walls, and roofs in multiple cities including Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, and Kasur.
In Lahore, two 220 kV grid stations operated by LESCO were shut down due to the storm, resulting in major power outages across several neighborhoods.
A tragic incident on Band Road occurred when a billboard fell on a motorcycle-riding family, killing the husband and injuring his wife and son.
In Daroghewala, the collapse of a house roof claimed the lives of two individuals, while another man was killed when a wall fell on him near Katarbund Road.
The similar tragedies were reported from other districts. In Sheikhupura’s Khanpur village, a 10-year-old boy died after a wall collapsed on him.
Another fatal wall collapse was reported in Kot Abdul Malik.
In Nowshera Virkan, a man died after being struck by lightning, and in Gujranwala’s Nandipur village, one person died due to electrocution.
The numerous incidents of collapsing walls and roofs due to heavy rain and wind were also reported from Ferozewala, Kasur, Nankana Sahib and surrounding areas where 27 people sustained injuries.
The authorities launched relief efforts in affected areas while the citizens are urged to take precautionary measures amid forecasts of more rain.
