WASHINGTON – TikTok is developing a new “US-only” version of its platform, internally codenamed “M2”, in response to mounting security concerns raised by the United States government.
The new version is expected to be launched this year in September.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the existing version of TikTok will remain operational for US users from November through March 2026.
After that, the users in the United States will be required to update to the new version of the app.
The move comes amid growing pressure from US lawmakers, who have demanded that TikTok’s American operations be separated from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, and handed over to local investors in order to safeguard national security and user data.
While it remains unclear how the new M2 app will manage its algorithms or handle user data, it is reportedly being built in compliance with American regulations.
The development follows China’s approval of a tech deal with the US, paving the way for the launch of M2.
In recent months, TikTok has also introduced new features such as ‘Smart Keyword Filters’, ‘Manage Topics’, and guided meditation tools, aimed particularly at creating a safer experience for younger users.
