LAHORE – The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has released data about the damage caused by monsoon rains this year.
The fact sheet includes the status of monsoon rains, water levels in rivers, barrages and dams and losses to public life and property.
So far, 39 citizens have died and 103 were injured in rain-related mishaps, while 47 houses were affected. The dead include 20 children, five women and 14 men. Most of the deaths were due to the collapse of shacks, dilapidated buildings and roofs.
Due to the collapse of dilapidated buildings, 24 deaths were reported, three due to electrocution, and eight due to drowning while bathing.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said that, as per government instructions, financial assistance will be provided to the bereaved families. The third series of monsoon rains will continue from today till the 17th. Water flow in most rivers and barrages of Punjab is at a normal level. In the Indus River, there is a moderate flood at Chashma, while there is a low flood situation at Tarbela, Kalabagh and Taunsa.
Given the possible flood threat, PDMA arrangements are complete. There is a risk of urban flooding in Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Gujranwala. The administrations of major cities are on alert given the emergency. PDMA Control Room and District Emergency Operation Centres are monitoring the situation 24/7.
Given further possible rains, the DG PDMA has issued instructions to the WASA and administration to ensure drainage of water from low-lying areas. The DG PDMA further said that the government has imposed a complete ban on bathing in rivers, canals and rainwater drains. Strict action will be taken in case of violation. Citizens should avoid unnecessary travel in bad weather. Stay away from electric wires and poles.
