LAHORE – A powerful spell of monsoon rain swept through Lahore and several other cities across Punjab on Friday, bringing much-needed relief from the sweltering heat but also triggering urban flooding, traffic congestion, and power outages in many areas.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), widespread rain accompanied by strong winds and thunder was reported in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Okara, Kasur, Sheikhupura, and other parts of central and northern Punjab. The monsoon downpour began early in the morning in some cities and continued intermittently throughout the day.
In Lahore, the rain led to water accumulation on major roads, including Mall Road, Ferozepur Road, Gulberg, and several low-lying residential areas. The Lahore Waste Management Company and Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) deployed emergency teams to drain water from inundated roads and restore smooth traffic flow. Despite efforts, massive traffic jams were witnessed during peak hours, causing inconvenience to commuters.
Several feeders of the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) tripped due to the stormy weather, resulting in temporary power outages in various localities, including Garden Town, Johar Town, and Iqbal Town.
The Met Office has forecast more rain with wind and thunderstorms in Lahore and other parts of Punjab over the next 24 to 48 hours, advising citizens to remain cautious, especially in flood-prone areas. The authorities have been alerted to ensure timely drainage, avoid electrocution hazards, and monitor river levels closely.
The provincial disaster management authorities have urged residents to stay updated through official weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during intense rain spells.
