LAHORE – Five member of family were killed and two others sustained injuries after a roof of a house collapsed during heavy rainfall in the Thokar Niaz Baig area of Lahore on Wednesday.
Rescue officials said the deceased include 60-year-old Manga, 55-year-old Ishrat, 35-year-old Rani, and two young girls, 4-year-old Latifa and 3-year-old Khadija. The injured were identified as 30-year-old Faisal and 5-year-old Bubbly.
The tragedy occurred late at night as torrential rain battered Lahore and its surrounding areas. Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) reported the highest rainfall at Pani Wala Talab with 171 mm, followed closely by Iqbal Town with 169 mm of rain.
The downpour also caused widespread urban flooding, submerging many key roads and severely affecting traffic and daily life across the city.
Apart from Lahore, several other cities in Punjab, including Pattoki, Okara, Sahiwal, Chichawatni, Mian Channu, Sargodha, Sialkot, and Gujrat, experienced intermittent rainfall.
Emergency response teams have been actively engaged in rescue and relief efforts as authorities continue to monitor the situation in flood-prone areas.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued an alert as heavy monsoon rains lash several districts, including Lahore. It said the spell expected to continue until July 17.
Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia has instructed all deputy commissioners across Punjab to remain vigilant and ensure timely response in case of any emergency arising from the ongoing monsoon rains.
“All relevant departments must remain on high alert to effectively handle any emergency situations,” said the DG PDMA in a statement.
He said the provincial control room and district emergency operation centres across Punjab have been fully activated and are monitoring the situation round the clock.
