The Sindh government has prepared a bill related to continuous monitoring of crime addicts with electronic devices. The proposed bill is likely to be presented in the upcoming session of the Sindh Assembly. According to the proposed bill, habitual criminals will be monitored through advanced technology. The electronic chip to monitor the addicted criminals will be implanted in the body of the addicted criminals in the form of anklets worn on the feet or wrist bracelets.
The proposed bill states that monitoring of habitual criminals is necessary to prevent street crime and protect citizens. If the habitual offender tampers with the bracelet/device, he will be fined heavily. According to the proposed bill, this device will be applied to habitual offenders at the discretion of a judge.
The Sindh Cabinet approved the draft of this bill on May 10. During the debate in the cabinet, a few ministers opposed the proposed bill and called it a violation of human rights, but after a long discussion, the cabinet approved the proposed bill.
The proposed bill is part of the Sindh Assembly’s agenda, which is likely to be tabled for approval in the next session. The approval of this bill will also facilitate the identification of habitual criminals. At that time, if any accused is caught in any incident, the police declares him a habitual criminal, but due to lack of evidence, the accused is acquitted. After the approval of this bill, it will be easier for the police to collect evidence against habitual criminals and thus the chances of convicting habitual criminals will also increase.
