LOS ANGELES – At least three died and several others suffered injuries in the wake of an explosion that rocked the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Biscailuz Center Training Academy.
The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. at 1060 N. Eastern Avenue in East Los Angeles, near specialized bomb squad vehicle belonging to department’s elite Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB). All three victims are believed to be deputies, though their identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
The explosion caused structural damage to County Sheriff’s Department Biscailuz Center Training Academy, scattering debris across the compound and prompting a large-scale emergency response. Cops and other agencies are investigating the cause of the explosion.
LASD spokesperson Sgt. Miguel Ruiz said department is deeply saddened by the loss this morning. calling this tragedy that affects our entire department and community.
Officials have not confirmed whether the explosion was accidental or the result of a device malfunction. Witnesses described hearing a “massive boom” followed by smoke and chaos within the normally secure training center.
The area surrounding the facility has been cordoned off, and authorities are urging the public to avoid the location as the investigation continues.
