KARACHI – Online taxi giant Careem pulls out of Pakistan after 9 years of ride-hailing operations, with the service officially ending next month in July.
The Dubai based company move marks end of operations in world fifth most populated nation, which saw several other players in the market.
In a statement, Dubai-based company thanked Pakistani customers for their trust and support over years. The company also confirmed that users with funds remaining in their digital wallets will soon receive step-by-step instructions on how to withdraw their balances.
Those having any issues are advised to contact Careem’s customer service which will remain active until mid September 2025.
Why Careem is leaving Pakistan?
The decision to exit South Asian comes amid strong competition from inDrive, Yango, and other rides which have significantly disrupted the local market. Despite Careem’s early dominance, maintaining operations under current market and economic conditions has become increasingly difficult.
The company CEO took to social media where he called the exit an incredibly tough, citing country’s economic challenges, fierce competition, and global investment shifts as key factors in the company’s choice to withdraw.
Last year, Uber ended its operations in Pakistan, fully transitioning its services to its subsidiary, Careem. After previously exiting major Users are being directed to use the Careem app instead, with Uber offering 50pc discount on five Careem rides to ease the transition.
