Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hassan Naqvi, chaired a meeting at his office to assess ongoing efforts to control food prices, remove encroachments, and address citizen complaints regarding civic facilities. The meeting was attended by Additional Commissioner Ghulam Mehdi Shah, all Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners Rabia Syed and Hazim Bangwar, along with other officials.
Assistant Commissioners joined the session via video link. The discussion centered on ensuring the availability of essential food items at official prices and addressing public grievances.
It was decided to strengthen the Market Committee and the Bureau of Supply for more effective price control. Assistant Commissioners were tasked with monitoring markets and shops to enforce official pricing and resolve citizen complaints.
Shops were instructed to prominently display price lists and maintain essential items at government-set rates. To improve transparency, the Market Committee was directed to enhance the auction system in vegetable markets. The meeting also decided to focus on controlling wheat flour, poultry, and egg prices in the coming week.
Assistant Commissioner Headquarters, Rabia Syed, presented a weekly report on actions against profiteering and urban governance. She shared that between December 21 and 28, fines totaling Rs. 2.3 million were imposed on profiteers across Karachi. Key fines included: District South: Rs. 571,000, District East: Rs. 727,000, District West: Rs. 104,000, District Central: Rs. 274,000, District Malir: Rs. 66,000, District Korangi: Rs. 338,000, District Keamari: Rs. 213,000.
From December 26 to 29, an additional Rs. 427,000 in fines were collected through crackdowns focusing on wheat prices. Deputy Commissioners were instructed to intensify actions against profiteers to stabilize prices and safeguard public interest.
