LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Olympics 2028 will officially begin on July 14 but cricket will make an early start as the matches are scheduled to begin two days prior, marking the sport’s historic return to the Olympic Games after 128 years.
According to the Olympics organizing committee, cricket matches will take place between July 12 and July 29, 2028. The dates of July 12 and 13 have been labeled as “minus two” and “minus one” days, meaning they will precede the official opening of the Games.
The cricket tournament will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will run from July 12 to July 18, and the second phase from July 22 to July 28. The grand final is scheduled for July 29, a day after the main Olympic schedule concludes.
The event will include both men’s and women’s competitions, each featuring six international teams. However, the organizing committee has yet to finalize the order of matches for men and women.
The decisions regarding the sequence of medal events and match scheduling are expected to be announced by the end of this year.
All cricket matches will be held at the Pomona Fairgrounds Cricket Stadium, which has been designated as the official venue for the sport.
The return of cricket to the Olympics is a momentous development, with the sport last featured in the Games in 1900. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is scheduled to meet in Singapore from July 17 to 20, where final decisions regarding the qualification process will be made. It is expected that the selection of participating teams will be based on the ICC rankings.
