Employers Federation of Pakistan (EFP) has introduced a Code of Conduct for employers of domestic workers. The launch took place during a tripartite meeting attended by over 100 representatives from employers, workers federations, civil societies, as well as officers from the labor department and the International Labour Organization (ILO). Addressing the ceremony, Shariq Ahmed, Secretary of the Labor & Human Resource Development Department Sindh, emphasized the importance of the code in promoting decent working conditions and protecting the rights of domestic workers.
He highlighted the challenges faced by domestic workers in the informal economy, including low wages and various forms of abuse, underscoring the significance of this initiative in providing a framework for legislation on domestic workers in Sindh. Geir Tonstol, Country Director of the ILO Pakistan Office, praised the initiative and stressed the importance of implementing international standards such as Convention 189 to promote decent work for domestic workers. He commended the EFP for their efforts and expressed hope that the code of conduct would lead to discussions and eventual legislation to protect domestic workers’ rights in Sindh.
Feroz Alam, Vice President of EFP, emphasized the integral role of domestic workers in society and highlighted the need for respect and good working conditions for them.
He emphasized that the code of conduct would bring about behavioral changes and recognition for domestic workers, who often serve as a significant source of employment, particularly for women with lower education levels. Majyd Aziz, Former President of EFP, reiterated the organization’s commitment to promoting compliance with international standards and social justice.
He urged all present, especially EFP members, to treat their housemaids with respect and dignity. Razi Haider, project coordinator, provided insights into the contributions and achievements of the PRS/STRIDE Project, while Ms. Aya Matsuura, ILO Gender Specialist, applauded EFP’s initiatives and highlighted the importance of recognizing the rights of domestic workers. Rao Zahid, Deputy Secretary of the Labor Department, Government of Punjab, shared insights into the Punjab Domestic Workers Act and discussed implementation challenges, particularly regarding social security coverage. Waqar Memon, Secretary-General of PWF, and Syed Nazar Ali, Secretary-General of EFP, expressed appreciation for the initiative and emphasized the need for laws to protect domestic workers’ rights in Sindh. Syed Nazar Ali outlined the key features of the code of conduct, stressing its role in fostering positive working relationships and equitable practices for domestic workers’ employers.
