ISLAMABAD – The grand jirga of Harban tribe in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Thor tribe in Gilgit-Baltistan finally reached settlement in a dispute over a tiny patch of land that has stymied the construction of Pakistan’s largest dam, Diamer Basha Dam.
The Diamer Bhasha dam is being built on the Indus River.
The “historic development” was announced by Prime Minister Imran Khan on Twitter. “Historic dev & good news on Diamer Bhasha Dam. Grand Jirga of Diamer & Upper Kohistan elders have settled decade old Thor & Harban tribes’ dispute,” he wrote.

The premier said that the development will allow smooth and timely completion of the dam as well as pave way for settlement of boundary dispute between GB and KP.
The disputed territory of about 8 km is under control of the federal government and the Rangers have been patrolling on the Karakoram Highway since 2014, when four people were killed in an exchange of fire between the two tribes.
The 4,500 megawatt dam is seen as crucial for solving Pakistan’s growing energy demands and providing water storage for irrigation.
