The Sindh government has announced plans to upgrade emergency wards in major public hospitals to address the increasing demand for emergency healthcare services. Chief Secretary Sindh, Asif Hyder Shah, chaired a high-level meeting today with senior health officials, hospital administrators, and experts to discuss the initiative.
The meeting was attended by key figures, including Secretary of Health Rehan Iqbal Baloch, Executive Director of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) Professor Shahid Rasool, Dr. Muhammad Sabir Memon from Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre, MS Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital Syed Khalid Bukhari, and Director of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital Dr. Faisal Samdani.
Chief Secretary Shah emphasized that the initiative aligns with the vision of Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah to bring comprehensive reforms in the health sector. These reforms aim to make emergency healthcare more accessible, efficient, and patient-focused, ensuring the province can meet the surging demand for medical services. Presenting data from a detailed survey, Shah highlighted the immense patient load on Sindh’s hospitals. For example, JPMC alone caters to 2,000 emergency patients daily, translating to 60,000 patients per month. Similarly, Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital treats 1,800 patients daily, amounting to 54,000 patients monthly. Collectively, emergency wards across Sindh manage nearly 10,000 patients daily, exceeding 299,000 each month.
To address this, the Sindh government plans to upgrade emergency wards in major hospitals and extend these improvements to district and tehsil-level facilities. Shah assured administrators of the government’s support in hiring additional medical staff, allocating financial resources, and procuring advanced medical equipment. Hospital administrators welcomed the initiative, offering recommendations based on their respective facility needs. The Chief Secretary directed them to submit detailed upgrade plans for swift review and implementation.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Shah stated, “The well-being of our citizens is our utmost priority. These upgrades will enhance the capacity of our healthcare facilities and ensure timely, high-quality medical care for patients in critical situations.” The proposed upgrades are expected to significantly strengthen Sindh’s emergency healthcare infrastructure, ultimately benefiting thousands of patients daily and contributing to a healthier, safer province.
