KARACHI – Port city of Karachi witnessed nearly two dozen low-intensity earthquakes, which caused panic among residents. The situation further sparked rumours, and social media posts saw misleading information about seismic activity.
Concerns are rising among those living in provincial capital as the city continues to experience low to moderate tremors. Amid the contrasting statements, Met Office experts said seismic activity is likely to persist for another 2-3 days but assured masses that there is no immediate threat of a major earthquake.
Earlier this week, Karachi witnessed several Richter scale, with strongest recorded on Sunday. Three additional quakes struck early Tuesday morning, contributing to growing public anxiety.
Met Office DG explained that the port city lies along minor fault lines which makes it prone to such tremors. He however said these are not signs of a large-scale seismic event. “The fault line in Sindh capital is not very active,” he said, adding these tremors are low in intensity and are expected to subside.
Earlier this week, Malir jail wall collapsed during one of the tremors, leading to jailbreak. PMD officials confirmed the prison’s location was near the epicenter of the seismic activity, making it more vulnerable.
As of now, the situation is under observation and aftershocks are expected to end within next few days. With experts rule out risk of massive quake, the recent activity put spotlight on Karachi’s seismic preparedness.
