NEW DELHI – In a major development, Jyoti Malhotra, a social media activist and YouTuber from Haryana arrested on charges of espionage for Pakistan, belonged to ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The revelation sparked controversy, with critics accusing the Modi government of staging a “false flag” operation to malign Pakistan.
Malhotra was taken into custody on May 17 on allegations of sharing sensitive information with Pakistani intelligence agencies. However, subsequent reports revealed that she was an active member of the BJP and had participated in several party events.
According to Border Security Force (BSF) sources, Malhotra was previously spotted near the border engaging in suspicious activities. When questioned, she identified herself as a member of “BJP Haryana.” BSF personnel reportedly allowed her to leave without further inquiry, allegedly stating, “Only BJP members are acceptable.”
The incident has triggered a wave of criticism on social media as many users calling it a failed attempt by the Modi administration to discredit Pakistan.
The online commentators argued that the government’s narrative collapsed after Malhotra’s own social media content—including Instagram posts and vlogs—clearly demonstrated her affiliation with the BJP.
The independent analysts also raised concerns over the conduct of the investigation. They point to the BSF’s apparent negligence and the possible shielding of BJP interests as the factors that make the espionage case appear increasingly dubious.
