Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, Federal Minister for Law & Justice, and Human Rights, held a meeting with Ms. Mary Robert, Commissioner from the Malaysian High Commission on Wednesday at Ministry of Human Rights. The discussions focused on addressing the challenges faced by Pakistani prisoners in Malaysia and exploring avenues for bilateral collaboration.
The discussions also included the potential finalization of a Prisoner Transfer Agreement between Pakistan and Malaysia. This agreement, once formalized, would allow Pakistani prisoners to serve their remaining sentences in Pakistan, reflecting the strong and cooperative ties between the two nations.
Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to expediting this agreement in close coordination with Malaysian authorities, including the Deputy Prime Minister.
He said that these efforts are in line with Pakistan’s National Emigration and Welfare Policy, which underscores the protection and welfare of overseas Pakistanis. Recognizing the critical contributions of the diaspora, the government is committed to safeguarding their rights, including those of undocumented workers and prisoners abroad.
The Malaysian delegation reaffirmed their commitment to addressing issues such as limited access to legal aid and communication barriers for prisoners. Both sides agreed on the importance of enhancing support mechanisms for the welfare of incarcerated individuals.
