KARACHI – A low-pressure system has developed over the east-central Arabian Sea and is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours as it moves northward, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Thursday.
The formation of the system has led to stronger-than-usual sea breezes in Karachi, with wind speeds recorded at 30.6 kilometres per hour (17 nautical miles per hour).
The PMD has forecast that wind speeds are likely to increase further by afternoon and could reach up to 45 kilometres per hour (25 nautical miles per hour).
The department stated that a cyclonic circulation currently extends over the Arabian Sea, originating from the northern Karnataka and Goa coasts of India.
Under its influence, the low-pressure area has formed in the same region.
The PMD’s Cyclone Warning Centre in Karachi is closely monitoring the situation and tracking the system’s development.
