ISLAMABAD – For the first time in Pakistan, a successful living donor liver transplant for colorectal metastasis was performed at a hospital in Islamabad.
The historic surgery was performed by Dr. Abu Bakar Hafeez Bhatti from Shifa International Hospital with support from our Oncology, Radiology, Lab, Surgery, and Transplant teams.
It was announced by the hospital in a social media post shared on Facebook, stating: “We are proud to share that Dr. Abu Bakar Hafeez Bhatti from Shifa International Hospital has performed Pakistan’s first-ever successful living donor liver transplant for colorectal metastasis, with support from our Oncology, Radiology, Lab, Surgery, and Transplant teams”.
A woman from Karachi, initially diagnosed with cancer in the lower part of her colon, later developed metastasis to the liver. As a result, a liver transplant was deemed necessary.
In a historic first, doctors removed the patient’s entire cancer-affected liver and replaced it with a donated portion from her husband.
Medical experts confirmed that the patient’s liver was entirely damaged due to cancer. Her husband donated the left lobe of his liver to save her life.
Reports said that the woman is now completely cancer-free and living a normal life.
This transplant marks a major milestone in Pakistan’s organ transplant and cancer treatment history, showcasing the growing capability of local healthcare institutions in handling complex oncological surgeries.
According to medical experts, early detection and advancements in surgical methods have significantly increased survival rates in cases where colon cancer spreads to the liver.
