Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, visited Lyari on Thursday, where he inaugurated the renovation and upgradation of the Bakra Piri Pumping Station alongside Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad. During his visit, he addressed the concerns of the local community and reaffirmed his commitment to improving the city’s infrastructure, especially in underprivileged areas.
“We will soon eliminate the sense of deprivation in Lyari, as well as across Karachi,” Mayor Wahab stated, emphasizing that under the leadership of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the journey of serving Karachi continues. Wahab further pledged that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) would continue to work for resolving the issues of the people, focusing on service delivery.
“Our promise is to solve the public’s problems, and the PPP will fulfill this commitment,” he asserted. Regarding water supply issues, Mayor Wahab highlighted the government’s efforts to stop water theft in Lyari and ensure that water from the Hub Canal would reach the area.
“Our promise and intentions are clear, and the leadership of PPP is directly accountable to the people,” he added. Mayor Wahab also mentioned that the development journey of Karachi began under the leadership of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, symbolized by the party’s election symbol, the arrow, and reiterated that PPP leadership is dedicated to public service.
He highlighted the party’s past achievements in the area, such as the establishment of a university and the Kakkri Ground in Lyari. “Lyari is the pride of the PPP, and it has always been the party’s stronghold. Anyone who feels jealousy can do so, but we are committed to the development of Lyari,” he remarked. On the issue of Bahria Town, the mayor clarified that the Sindh government has no direct connection with the project.
He confirmed that payments related to the project would be handled by the Supreme Court and reiterated that PPP does not support illegal constructions or “China cutting.” “Karachi’s residents are known for their big hearts. People from here go to the US, and even American women come here out of love for Karachiites,” he quipped. Regarding illegal constructions, Mayor Wahab assured that no support would be extended for such activities.
He further promised to raise the matter of illegal constructions with the Minister for Local Government, as the Sindh Building Control Authority falls under the jurisdiction of the Local Government Ministry. He addressed the notice issued by the Water Corporation to Bahria Town for fourteen billion rupees, emphasizing that legal action will be taken in accordance with the law.
