ISLAMABAD – The federal government has announced a slew of measures to ensure social protection of marginalised segment of society through Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).
Presenting the budget for fiscal year 2025-26, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the federal government has set aside Rs592 billion for BISP. He added that the BISP will be expanded by 15% in next fiscal year.
The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) is a social safety net initiative in Pakistan aimed at providing financial assistance to low-income families. Launched in 2008, BISP targets the most vulnerable segments of society, especially women, to help alleviate poverty and promote financial inclusion. Beneficiaries receive regular cash transfers through a transparent and digitized system.
The program uses a National Socio-Economic Registry to ensure that support reaches those who need it most. Over the years, BISP has expanded to include educational support for children and initiatives for economic empowerment. It has played a key role in reducing the effects of inflation and economic hardship for millions. BISP is considered one of the largest and most impactful welfare programs in Pakistan. It operates under the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety and collaborates with international organizations for funding and technical assistance.
