LAHORE – A proposal to convert the upcoming three-match One Day International (ODI) series between Pakistan and the West Indies into T20 Internationals is under discussion, the sources said on Wednesday.
The sources said that the consultations are ongoing between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Cricket West Indies (CWI) to revise the format of the scheduled white-ball series. The proposed change has been suggested in light of preparations for the T20 Asia Cup and the ICC T20 World Cup.
The officials believed that playing more T20 matches would help the national side build a strong combination and fine-tune their preparations ahead of the major global tournaments.
The Pakistan team is scheduled to tour the United States and the West Indies in late July for a white-ball series. As per the current itinerary, the T20 Internationals are scheduled to be played on July 31, August 2, and August 3 in Florida while the ODIs are to be held on August 8, 10 and 12 in Trinidad.
This is not the first time a series format has been revised for strategic reasons.
Previously, the cricket boards of Pakistan and Bangladesh had agreed to convert a series of three ODIs and three T20s into a five-match T20 series.
However, due to rising tensions between Pakistan and India, the series was eventually limited to three T20 matches.
Pakistan had convincingly whitewashed Bangladesh in that series, with several young players delivering standout performances on home soil.
