ISLAMABAD – The President of Pakistan has been given the power to remove the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman from office, as per the National Accountability (Third Amendment) Ordinance, 2021 signed by President Arif Alvi.
The Ministry of Law and Justice has issued the ordinance that withdraws powers from the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) to remove the NAB chief.
The tenure of the NAB chairman, as per the third ordinance, will be of four years while the process to remove the anti-graft buster head will be the same as the one for the removal of a Supreme Court judge.
NAB has been given authority to investigate the cases related to fraud, deception and Modarba.
The new ordinance shall come into effect at once and the amendments shall be deemed to have taken effect on and from October 6, 2021.
The law ministry had formed a committee to explain the NAB ordinance when ambiguities spotted after it was issued on October 6.
Evidence should be recorded in the old pattern till the installation of electronic devices, the Ordinance read. The accountability court, as per the ordinance, was also given the authority to fix bail.
