LAHORE – The Punjab government has finalised security arrangements for Muharram.
For the first time in Punjab, it has been decided to deploy cyber patrolling, establish a rapid response force, and set up a special cell to monitor fake news on social media during Muharram. The final approval of the security plan will be given at the meeting chaired by the Chief Minister on June 25.
The security plan was finalised at a meeting chaired by Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Sunday. It was also decided that spokespersons will be appointed in every district to ensure timely public awareness and to effectively counter rumours. Strict legal action will be taken against those spreading misleading information, rumours, and fake news on social media, with criminal cases to be registered and punishments to follow.
The meeting was briefed that over 110,000 security personnel will be deployed across Punjab during Muharram. All processions and religious gatherings will be monitored through Safe City cameras, drones, and advanced facial recognition technology. Special security points equipped with modern technology will be set up at all procession entry routes.
Additionally, 79 Rangers personnel will assist with security arrangements. Section 144 will remain enforced throughout the province, and no individual other than security forces will be allowed to carry weapons.
Maintenance, sanitation, and protection of manholes along the procession routes have been completed. Alternative traffic plans and parking facilities are being provided, and clear signs will be displayed along the routes to assist citizens. All Sabeels will follow a uniform design, and due to expected extreme heat, the proposed adjustment of procession timings is under consideration.
Arrangements for shade, potable water, first aid points, field hospitals, and mobile clinics will be ensured at all times along the procession routes. Public toilets will also be provided, along with special cleaning arrangements. Female police officers will not be allowed to carry personal mobile phones during duty hours.
A central fake news monitoring cell has been established at the Directorate General of Public Relations (DGPR), which will immediately detect misinformation during Muharram and initiate legal action. All district control rooms will be linked to this monitoring network. Consultations with religious scholars, peace committees, and all relevant stakeholders have been completed.
Security rehearsals and advanced drills have also been carried out to ensure a timely response to any emergency. The meeting also decided that aerial surveillance of the processions will be conducted using drones.
