ISLAMABAD – Violent storms swept Lahore, and parts of Punjab, leaving a trail of death and destruction on Saturday as PDMA cautioned citizens.
So far, eight people have lost their lives and 45 others injured as powerful rainstorms swept across region, officials said. The deadly weather system caused widespread destruction, prompting authorities to issue high alerts and temporarily shut down major roadways to ensure public safety.
Solar panels were damaged, trees were uprooted while sign boards also caused injuries. Provincial officials directed DCs and emergency services to remain on high alert as intense winds and rain battered various districts. Emergency operation centers across the province have been activated and are monitoring the situation around the clock.
Motorway Police reported closures on several major routes, including M2 from Thokar to Kot Momin, M3 from Faizpur to Darkhana, and Lahore-Sialkot Motorway. Heavy cloud cover and thunderstorms were also reported along the M4 and M5 motorways, as well as sections of the national highway.
In Sheikhupura, a tragic incident occurred when strong winds caused factory roof to collapse, killing worker from Sadiqabad and seriously injuring five others. Rescue 1122 teams responded swiftly, transporting the injured to the district hospital.
Officials confirmed that most fatalities resulted from collapse of unstable or mud-built homes. According to the preliminary damage report, three deaths were reported in Jhelum, with one fatality each in Rawalpindi, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Sialkot, and Mianwali.
Electric Power Company also reported power outages were affecting several areas, while field teams were active to restore power.
