MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin secured a fifth term in a landslide victory, according to Russian exit polls.
The presidential election in the Russian Federation was held March 15 through 17. For the first time, the polling stations were open for three days including remote online voting, which was available in almost a third of the regions.
Exit polls data announced by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center showed Putin bagged 87 percent of votes to win the fifth term in the office.
Putin is followed by the Communist Party’s Nikolai Kharitonov, who got 4.6% votes only while Vladislav Davankov from the New People Party secured 4.2% of the vote.
Votes for the three-day polls were cast across 11 different time zones between Friday and Sunday.
In a victory speech, Putin thanked people of Russia for their support, saying that his win would further strengthen country.
