WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump on Monday issued a warning to the BRICS alliance following its condemnation of American and Israeli attacks on Iran.
Trump stated that any country aligning with BRICS’ anti-American stance will face an additional 10% tariff.
“No exemptions will be made under this policy,” he said, adding, “Thank you for paying attention to this matter.”
The President further said that letters concerning tariffs would be sent to various countries later today.
The warning came after the BRICS bloc — comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — denounced the attacks on Iran’s civilian and nuclear facilities, describing them as violations of international law.
The condemnation was part of the official declaration during the 17th BRICS Summit, which began on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
While the statement criticized the military strikes on Iranian civilian and IAEA-supervised peaceful nuclear sites, it did not explicitly name the United States or Israel.
Additionally, BRICS called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza and demanded the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and all other occupied Palestinian territories.
The summit also expressed concern over steep increases in trade tariffs, calling them a threat to global commerce.
BRICS members supported the accession of Iran and Ethiopia to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
It may be mentioned here that BRICS originally consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa but now includes new members such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
