KARACHI – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Friday predicted heavy rains in the first phase of the monsoon season and warned of potential flooding in the plains and mountainous regions of Sindh, Punjab, Azad Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
The Met Office issued its seasonal outlook for the 2025 monsoon, predicting normal to slightly above-normal rainfall in central and southern parts of the country.
The PMD said that intense rainfall is expected during the initial phase of the monsoon, raising the risk of flooding in both plains and hilly areas of Sindh, Punjab, Azad Kashmir, and KP.
The department stated that northeastern Punjab and Kashmir may experience above-normal rainfall, while northern KP and Gilgit-Baltistan are likely to receive normal or slightly below-normal precipitation. Heavy downpours could lead to flooding in major rivers. Additionally, temperature fluctuations may trigger strong winds, dust storms, and hailstorms.
The Met Office further warned that higher temperatures in KP and Gilgit-Baltistan may accelerate snowmelt, leading to elevated water levels in rivers.
However, the anticipated rains are expected to benefit irrigation and energy sectors by ensuring ample water supply, and will aid in the replenishment of water reservoirs and underground water resources.
The PMD identified flood risks in northern Punjab, Azad Jammu & Kashmir and KP, and has advised activation of emergency operation centers at provincial and district levels.
It also called for the deployment of rescue and relief teams during the monsoon season and coordination with the local authorities to ensure timely evacuations and early warnings.
The citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall.
Besides it, from July to September, the temperatures across the country are expected to remain above normal, with a notable increase in temperatures likely in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and KP.
