WhatsApp services disrupted for mobile data users in Pakistan - but why?

LAHORE – Whatsapp Users in Pakistan are facing problems while sharing filed using mobile data since Ashura.

Those who are using on broadband are facing smooth instant messaging however those using data are experiencing disruptions.

As the disruption affected badly people across the country, several users took to other social sites amid curiosity. Initially, it has been learnt that 3G, and 4G users are facing issues while sharing notes, pictures, and documents on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp Issue in Pakistan Today

The disruption has been ongoing since couple of days, but no telecom company shared an update on the issue.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) stated that they have not received any formal complaints about the issue. The telecom authority is however investigating the matter after media reports brought it to their attention.

Downdetector and other internet monitoring apps also registered complaints about WhatsApp outage.

Several other social applications like Facebook are also showing issues while loading feeds and sending texts.

Earlier, Punjab government requested interior ministry to shut down social media apps from Muharram 6 to 11 to prevent the spread of hate speech and misinformation.

The decision was made due to reports of external forces spreading hate content. Home Department emphasized that shutting down the internet caused public inconvenience while social media apps continued to disseminate hate material.
