ISLAMABAD – Pakistan will observe Eid-ul-Adha, one of two major Islamic festivals on June 7, as moon marking the beginning of Islamic month of Zilhaj has been sighted, a day after Ruet body holds moon sighting meeting.
On Tuesday, chief of country’s apex moon sighting body, Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, confirmed no testimonies of ZilHajj moon sighting after meeting of members of central and zonal Ruet-e-Hilal committees.
In a press briefing after the meeting, Maulana Azad stated that the Zilhaj moon had not been sighted across any region of the country on Tuesday evening. Based on this, he announced that Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated on June 7.
Suparco earlier indicated that the chances of sighting the crescent were extremely low. Astronomical data suggested that at the time of sunset, the moon was only about 11 hours old, making it nearly impossible to view through the naked eye.
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Bakra Eid, is one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar. The occasion commemorates the willingness of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command and is marked by special prayers, animal sacrifice, and acts of charity.
